Ice skating at Olympic Plaza

One thing we are really trying to embrace in Canada is the different seasons and all they have to offer. This is especially true of winter, and we love getting out and about in the beautiful snowy wonderland.

We have especially enjoyed ice skating and, now that we all have our own skates, we are excited to explore some of the outdoor rinks, and eventually, once the kids are more competent on the ice, try some wild ice skating on a frozen lake. Lake Louise is definitely top of my bucket list for this.

Recently we met up with some friends at the Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary for an afternoon of ice skating. Every year they flood the area to make an outdoor rink for the public to enjoy for free. It’s a great spot, surrounded by the big city buildings and the Calgary Tower looming overhead. There is plenty of parking nearby and the CTrain also stops one street down, so it’s very easy to get there.

Skating at the Plaza really is a lot of fun, with music playing and families enjoying the time together. Tim Hortons is just around the corner, so it’s great to cozy up with a hot chocolate or two when you feel like a little break. And now, as Christmas approaches, they decorate the area with beautiful lights and a giant Christmas tree in the middle of the rink. It reminds me of the Christmas scenes you often see in the movies and it’s quite magical. I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time we were there.

This was such a wonderful family outing and I can definitely see this being a regular activity for us over the winter weekends ahead. I’m especially looking forward to seeing it at night with all the lights lit up.
